3/13/2015: President Lee's Weekly Message

A very good Sunday morning. Although it is raining, we have been fortunate to have a couple weeks of amazing weather.

Friday was truly a HAPPY day at Rotary. A big special thanks to Rick Schroff for pulling off an EPIC happy ads session while I worked through some tech issues.

We have an amazing club. I really can’t tell you how thankful I am for each and every one of you. Most of you have heard me say I am loving my year as president. This is because of each of you.
A special thanks to everyone who helped our meeting be a success this week. Each week it takes a lot of time, effort and people to make our meetings a success. Your time is truly appreciated. I also mentioned Friday the efforts of our programs committee. They work diligently to bring us interesting programs each week – just like CREATE from this last week.

On Friday before our meeting we had our first official Rotary Movie in the Park meeting and we made great progress. Over the next month you will be hearing more. Please mark Thursday, August 6th on your calendar. For us to have a magical evening, we will need everyone involved and I promise you it will be magical! Wait until you hear and see what Kate Lacy and Amy Jauron have planned.

The Recap this week is going to be focused on a recap of multiple activities currently happening in our club. See below and please take a minute to read through. There are so many outstanding efforts going on in our club.

Make it a great week and see you Friday for some club business and two vocationals from Russ Hedge and Jill Schuster. If you need anything or have any questions – please let me know.

Four-Way Test Contest
Students from Corvallis High School and Crescent Valley High School are invited to participate in the Rotary Club of Greater Corvallis’ Four-Way Test speech contest.
The contest will be held on Tuesday, March 17 at 7:30 pm in the auditorium of Linus Pauling Middle School. The students may choose any topic for their speech, but it must show clearly the practical application of all four points of the Rotary Four-Way Test.
A few judges from our club are needed, please contact Larry Symonds, if you would like to volunteer or for more information about the contest.

Message from President-elect Gerry:
“Want to help take our club to higher levels? Join other club members at the District Training Assembly in Cottage Grove on Saturday, April 11. The purpose of the district assembly is to prepare incoming club officers, committee chairs, and other club leaders for their year in office. This District also provides learning opportunities for club members in general and members new to Rotary to learn more about what is happening in our District and Rotary International. The program offers something for everyone. A continental breakfast and lunch are provided free but registration is required. Register for the DTA on DACdb. Attendees registering and present for the DTA’s closing plenary at 3:15pm will be eligible to win prizes, including a Paul Harris Fellow!

Lets Make History Together

Dear Fellow Rotarians;

Our club is embarking on a quest to develop an important and valuable historical profile of our club. Other Benton County clubs are also doing this, and of course we expect our effort will not be outdone! In order to accomplish our goal, we need everyone to contribute. Here is what we need.

Send me everything you can gather, including photographs (very important as we intend do develop a visual product) and written concise descriptions, of past and present events, programs, projects, and anything else our club has been involved in during your years in Rotary. No event is too big or small to be important. Photos hard copies can be given to me, President Lee, Judy Corwin, or Al Hutchinson.

I will mark you off the list as you reply. If you don’t reply, you will be contacted again (and again, and again, and again…) until I hear from you. You might as well save both of us some aggravation and “get ‘er done!”.

Our deadline for information gathering is May 1.

Some folks will be putting much effort into this project, so please do your small part to make their job easier. Thanks!
In Rotary,
Mike Sheets

Rotary Friendship Exchange is Rotary’s exchange program for single Rotarians or Rotarians and their spouses. Friendship Exchanges allow Rotarians the op-portunity to experience another culture or geographic area first hand in the homes of Rotarians in another country or district. The exchanges are reciprocal and usually last about two to three weeks. The goal of the program is to advance international understanding, goodwill, and peace through person-to-person contact across national boundaries. District 5110 focuses solely on team exchanges and preference will be given to those helping organize and host an incoming exchange. Visits usually include three to four different hosts and hosts are located in different parts of the district. Rotarians would spend two to three nights with each host. The number of participants in an exchange varies from four to six couples, singles, or a combination (for a total of 12).

An incoming Swedish team will be visiting our area June 2nd – 5th. We are looking for hosts for 3 couples and 2 singles. Hosts will transport the guests to scheduled activities. Hosts will also suggest local events, places, and activities that match the guests interests. Hosts will provide housing and some meals. There is no reimbursement for hosting. However, hosts may be considered for future out-going teams. Future out-going team destinations being considered are India, Wales, Peru, Philippines and Turkey.
