Oregon State University soccer alum Lindsay Meiggs remembers the “smiles on children’s faces” when she thinks about Beavers without Borders, a program where OSU athletes travel outside the United States to do projects for countries around the world. Beavers without Borders has been in existence for seven years, helping to plant corn, paint, and participate with local community children in countries such as Guatamala, Ethiopia and the Domincan Republic.
Rotarians learned from Meiggs, women’s basketball player Devon Hunter and football player Connor Kelsey about the many projects and countries the athletes have participated with. “Our impact is community engagement, upgrade a facility, and play with the children,” said Meiggs. Hunter traveled with 18 student athletes to the Domincan Republic to help install an irrigation system. “It was a privilege to go and an amazing opportunity to connect with others,” she said.
Kelsey called his experience “humbling” and created a documentary of his experiences. “I didn’t realize how life-changing the experience would be. They had no water and we take water for granted.”
A highlight for all of the athletes is participating with local Little League teams in foreign countries!
