RCGC Meeting Recap: Friday, February 12, 2016

IMPORTANT – SPREAD THE WORD!! Next Meeting (Feb 19) at Boy’s and Girl’s Club – All Service Club Meeting 11:45 am.
Today’s meeting began with Locke Williams introducing visiting Rotaract members Luna Fagan (co-president) and Jeremy (treasurer). The OSU Rotaract Club is 35 members strong, a vibrant and active service club on the university campus. Luna provided brief summary Rotaract activities, as well as expressing appreciation to the club for providing financial assistance to two club members that traveled to California for the Rotary International Peace Conference, attended by RI President K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran.
Mark Kalmar introduced a lively club activity entitled “Third and Goal” designed to help the club reach the Presidential Citation, otherwise known as the club president’s goals. Mark distributed headshot placards of your club president, challenging members to ensure that 100 “unique social media posts” are viewed, to include those at #ROTARYGC. If that happens, your club president would spin the “Wheel of Immediate Gratification.” Stay tuned…..more to come!
Announcements:
Service Thanks: To Rotarian volunteers Inge King, Paul Goodmonson, Charlie Mitchell, Helen Higgins, Ken Haines, Michelle Davis, Richard Havard, Les Boudreaux, Becki Goslow, Ken Robblee, and Brian Augustine for their service to Franklin K-8 school with the Junior Achievement program. Special thanks to Anissa Athenayake for coordinating this event for the school and the students.
Service Thanks: To Brian Augustine for coordinating and prompting the donation of raffle prize gift card to the club. Club members are encouraged to donate a $5 gift card for the raffle prize.
Rotary Board of Directors Activity: The board approved a leave of absence request from Glenda & Stan Baker. The board also honored Ron Thiesen with an Honorary Membership with the club. Kate Lacy is assuming leadership with the end-of-year Changeover event.
Judy Corwin made available free passes to the Corvallis Clinic sponsored “Pink Out” at Friday’s Woman’s Basketball Game at Gill to support survivors of breast cancer.
Michele Kellison announced that a few seats are available for the Saturday, February 20th Italian Dinner at Grand Oaks Clubhouse, catered by Iovino’s. She also announced the “Rotarians at Work Day” that occurs on the last Saturday of April. Keep the date open for a service project activity.
Kate Lacy advocated for the annual Benton County High School Career Fair. Volunteers are needed for a mock interview with juniors. Register ASAP at www.bchscc.org/
Lu An Carone-Rhodes is seeking members for the annual “Read Across Corvallis” celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 2nd. Contact Lu An if you have 30 minutes to spare to read to elementary children: luancarone13@hotmail.com
Tiffany Bailey announced that planning is underway for the annual “Middle Level Student Essay Contest.” Volunteers are needed to read and judge essay contributions. The date of the reading is Saturday, February 27th. If you want to assist, please contact Tiffany at: tiffany.bailey@me.com
Dolf DeVos and Stewart Laney conducted the weekly 50/50 raffle to raise funds for our student exchange student, Franziska Maria Saal. Money raised will help fund the annual exchange trip to California.
Carla Francis was inducted as the newest member of the club, sponsored by Becki Goslow. Carla was previously a member of the Rotary Club of Corvallis Wednesday Morning. Welcome to the club, Carla – it’s good to have you as a member!
Joseph Bailey introduced our featured speaker Dr. Greg Hamann, President of Linn Benton Community College (LBCC). Dr. Hamann assumed leadership of LBCC in February 2010, the 6th President of the college. Locally Greg is President of the Board of Directors with the Boy’s and Girls Club as well as a board member with the United Way. He is also a member of the Department of Corrections Re-entry Council. Greg stated that he is committed to leading LBCC, making sure that students are successful in all of their educational pursuits. He is also committed to be a mentor to others, demonstrating activity at the community, state, and national levels. With an active partnership with others to ensure pathways to student success, Greg is proud of his work with PIPELINE, a school to workplace association coordinated with business enterprises. His mission is the make a difference, allowing and promoting others to have the freedom to be creative and innovative. His three primary goals: [1] productivity – increasing student completion rates; [2] Equity – ensuring that completion rates that are demographically representative of the community; and, [3] Quality – completion that demonstrates capacity to better one’s life and contribute to the community. Greg reviewed the current construction projects as well as the future vision for expansion of the college. Go Roadrunners!
