Greater Rotary Recap for September 18, 2015

College football always provides an element of excitement to the Friday meetings as fans anticipate the Saturday kick-off, especially for home events. The Praffle is in full swing, adding a fun element to the activity. Friday was also the occasion of the United Way “Day of Caring,” which found Charlie Mitchell spearheading a team from the club to provide service to the community. Thanks to the team and thanks to Jennifer Moore, for her leadership with this effort on behalf of the United Way.
The meeting began with an Inspiration delivered by Josh Pennebaker. Josh, an inspirational dad, is often spotted around town, pushing a stroller with his other children in tow. We welcomed visiting Corvallis After Five Rotarian John DeNoma II, as well as visiting guests: Peter Ball, Paul Canthron, Gregg Oberlin, Erik Atkinson, Julene Tudor, Caroline Cummings, Kate Fountain, John Polansky, and Ryan Moss.
Announcements:  Dave Henderer announced that a few vacancies still need to be filled for the clubs booth selling pizza at the Fall Festival, September 25th and 26th. Thanks to all who participate in this fun activity! Congratulations to the winner this week: Inge King

Larry Holcomb, as a new member to the club, presented his Vocational, informing members of his background, his career and his interest and love of Rotary.
The speakers for the afternoon were Catherine M. Mater, representing Citizens for Protecting Corvallis, and Gregg Olson, Acting Executive Director of Corvallis Housing First. The two speakers presented both sides of the issue regarding the proposal to build a new homeless shelter in Corvallis. It was an interesting information forum where both individuals expressed a need to address that homeless issue in Corvallis, but from different perspectives. Club members interested in hearing more (understanding that our meeting can only provide an brief overview of this complicated issue) should attend the Corvallis Homeless Shelter Info Session, Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00pm, at the Corvallis-Benton Country Public Library (645 NW Monroe).
The meeting ended with OSU Beaver and UofO Duck football predictions.
Al Hutchinson – Beavers vs. San Jose State: Al predicts OSU winning 31-10 Al’s record: one correct prediction; score variation – 14 points
Gerry Kosanovic – Ducks vs. Georgia State: Gerry predicts Oregon winning 54-3 Gerry’s record: one incorrect prediction: score variation – 6 points
Next Week, September 18: Forum Discussion: Building a New Benton County Jail with speakers Sherriff Scott Jackson and attorney David Grappo.
