RCGC Meeting Recap: Friday, May 13, 2016

The meeting began with an Inspirational message from Tiffany Bailey, telling us, on this Friday the 13th date, that the luck is what you make it (it reminded me of the adage: “The harder I work, the luckier I get.”). Tiffany then led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Andy Tucknott introduced visiting Rotarians, Pete Sekermestrovich and Eric Blackledge (Corvallis). Stephanie Douglas introduced her guest, Karen Messo, Lauren Gallegos introduced her guest, Shannen Pimm, and Don Klaus introduced his guests, Gary & Jeannie Pastega.

ANNOUCEMENTS

 District 5110 Conference: The RCGC was honored at last week’s conference with the following: Governor’s Citation for Outstanding Large Club; Best Webpage; Best Facebook Presence; Governor’s Award for Excellence; Large Club President of the Year. Also, Judy & Mike Corwin graduated from the District Leadership Academy. Congratulations to you both! In addition to the Corwin’s, also attending were Julie Manning, Larry Holcomb, and Michele Kellison. Finally, our high school entry to the District 5110 4-Way Test Speech Contest, Colleen Corrigan, took home a 3rd place check for $500 with a great performance.
 Service Project: Thanks to members that painted the Chintimini Wildlife Center last weekend. Thanks, Ali Bonakdar for coordinating.
 Service Project: The annual Food Share canned food drive, collected by the postal workers, will sort contributions at Western/2nd Avenue on Saturday at 3pm…..volunteers needed.
 Service Project: Readers needed!! Volunteers are needed to read 200 word essays for the Ethics in Business Scholarship. It’s all-electronic – read from the comfort of your home and select the best essay. E-mail: drgerryk@gmail.com
 Service Project: Assistance is needed at the May 20th meeting – if you can stay after the meeting for 30 minutes, we need to select the high school Scholar-Citizen-Athlete Awards.
 Service Project: “Out to the Ballgame” 5K run needs volunteers to help monitor the race on Saturday, June 5th.  Foundation NEWS: Jim Swinyard reviewed the status of meeting our Foundation goal for the year. He also explained the process for members to continube by becoming a sustaining member – making a small contribution each month. Jim stated that the club will match 2/1 point contributions toward securing a Paul Harris Fellow; those seeking their first Paul Harris Fellow will receive a 3/1 match of points. A great opportunity – contact Jim for details.
 Event Notice: Jeff Davis announced the Corvallis Spring Roll, a Bike and Trike Firde and Cycle Fair for kids on Sunday, May 22. For more info, contact Jeff.
 Event Notice: Lauren Gallegos announced that the club’s annual Changing of the Guard will take place Thursday evening, June 30th. ALL club members should attend with a guest of their choice (spouse, mate, significant other, etc). The meeting gavel will be handed to President-Elect Judy Corwin. If you have items that can be auctioned in the oral (large items) or silent (small items) auction, contact Lauren.

 Event Notice: Ken Pastega announced the return of the annual Mario Pastega Memorial Golf Tournament, scheduled for August 16th at the Corvallis Country Club. To register online, visit: samhealth.org/PastegaGolf
 The Student Exchange: Dolf Devos conducted the weekly 50/50 raffle to raise funds for our student exchange student, Franziska Maria Saal. Money raised will help fund the annual exchange trip to California. The winners – Peg Obrist and Franzi – splitting the pot.

PRESENTATION

 Carol Lee Woodstock introduced our guest presenters from the Oregon State University Women’s Basketball team, Sydney Weise, Gabby Hanson, and assistant coach, Eric Ely. Sydney & Gabby walked through the season for club members, relating their joys and challenges with the team. They provided first-hand testimonials regarding the amazing run to the Final Four of the Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament in Indianapolis. Both players will return for next season and they stated that the experience made them hungrier than ever to return to the level of greatness achieved this season. They both stated that the loss to powerhouse NCAA champion Connecticut made them keenly aware of what it takes to be the number #1 team in the nation. Eric Ely related his pride with working with committed athletes and his optimism for the future of the program.
